ICAA - the International Council on Alcohol and Addcitions, an independent, not-for-profit non-governmental organisation was established during the 11th International Congress Against Alcoholism in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1907 as the International Bureau Against Alcoholism (IBAA), with its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
It is appropriate that ICAA celebrates its 101st birthday in Cyprus this year. This ancient land that has historically served as a gateway between east and west, will welcome our diverse ICAA family for an unforgettable conference this November. ICAA’s world wide mission requires us to find effective ways and means to bridge the cultural and socio political mix that our membership represents. We are a truly inclusive organization; what unite us is our commitment and our determination that no voices be stilled, that all opinions be heard and considered in a disciplined and objective fashion.
Our mission is to promote public health and to advocate for informed and compassionate policy making in the addictions field; for ideology free research and for a well trained and empowered work force. The problem of addiction is as old as human history; though we make hopeful advances; new challenges arise with equal speed. As we consider our achievements, we must do so in the light of emerging issues. We advocate for no particular modality or solutions; rather we campaign for principles; that the needs of those who suffer be of primary concern; that their health and that of the communities they live in be safeguarded; that the vulnerable and the young be adequately informed, that governments provide for a robust infrastructure and a well trained work force and that we continue to stay open and receptive to innovations and new discoveries. We believe that the agora that annual ICAA conferences have become is essential to promoting these goals.
Our theme this year is empowering the practitioner. The content has been developed to inspire reflection concerning policy, theory and practice. Each plenary theme will be examined for its relevance and impact on practice. This will be a conference where the scientists and policy makers will engage and dialogue with the practitioners; it will be about empowering and affirming the role of the practitioner as an essential partner in policy making. It will also be about capacity building, about forging new and strengthening existing networks, about the unencumbered flow of information and expertise, the world over.
The Cyprus conference will welcome a most impressive gathering of leading experts both as presenters and as participants. A unique postscript to the conference will be a capacity building training institute designed to benefit the practitioners of the regions. The faculty for this institute will be drawn on a voluntary basis from those attending the conference; this will be another example of ICAA putting its “caring and sharing” philosophy into action through its world renowned training programs.
I believe we have in place all the elements required for an extraordinary event. Our Cypriot colleagues provide us with outstanding local leadership; the conference site is a superb, luxurious seaside resort at an unbelievably modest price; the program will feature leading presenters and a unique format conclusive to true exchange and debate; a fun filled cultural and social program; and finally Cyprus itself a warm beautiful welcoming island, rich in history, filled with ancient wisdom, a gateway between east and west. Please join us in Cyprus this November, come to share, learn, teach, and be part of this unforgettable gathering. I look forward to personally welcoming you to Limassol this coming November.
Warm regards,
Dr. Peter A. Vamos
President Dear Practitioners, Colleagues, Guests,
It is my country’s, Cyprus, and my organization’s, KENTHEA, privilege to do the honours of the 51st Conference of ICAA - the biggest, oldest, and the most respective World nongovernmental organisation, working in the field of prevention and treatment of dependence. Therefore, according to that great responsibility, we shall do our best, in order to meet all the needs, requirements, and expectations of our distinguished colleagues and guests.
Cyprus is a small island. Nevertheless, this country could be seen as a good example for many other countries with its excellently developed tourism, services, and safety. These achievements, together with the unique traditional hospitality of Cypriots and a fantastic combination of nature and climate, attract each year some 2.5 million tourists from all over the World, that is to say almost five times more than the local population.
In order to provide you, respected colleagues and guests, with a pleasant combination of useful Conference programme with amusements, KENTHEA, as the hosting organization, has already prepared special programmes for conducted tours in places of interest and other social programme initiatives. As you know, the Conference is going to be held from 2 to 7 November this year. While in many countries is a time of deep autumn or even winter, for us it is simply a continuation of summertime. Thus, we can say that we could provide you with a perfect combination of Conference programme and holidays. Moreover, ICAA and KENTHEA offer, in addition to Conference programme, some 35 hours of continuous education in the frames of the ICAA Institute, which is an excellent opportunity for some of you to participate in the Institute for minimal expenses.
With our thanks to the President of ICAA, the members of the ICAA Board of Directors, and the members of the Organizing Committee for the confidence they showed to us, we invite you to come to the Conference and we are looking forward to show you the well known Cypriot hospitality.
“Εν οίδα ÏŒτι ουδÎν ίδα ” – “All I know is I know nothing” - said Socrates more than 2 000 years ago. That is the Greek motto of the Conference. We share that principle in the field of knowledge. We are only sure that we know one thing, one only thing: your visit to Cyprus will remain to you unforgettable.
We are looking forward to see you in Cyprus.
